Stunned Mullet is the the debut release from Angler: an enigmatic blend of clear-cut grooves, squelchy synths, deceptively melodic lines and liberating improvisation. Pulling together its influences from new hip hop, improv and electronica, the sound connects with listeners across the genre divides.
A stripped down, purely live duo consisting of Cameron Reynolds on piano/synths and Tom Greenhalgh on drums, they approach the limitations of a small line-up as an emancipation and produce a clean, open sound.
Recorded in August 2012 entirely live with no overdubs or edits, the 5 track EP of originals was captured in a school in Tottenham, north London where both Reynolds and Greenhalgh work part time as instrumental music teachers. Mixing and mastering was done by Alex Bonney in Ear Connector Studio in London. EP cover artwork is by Seb Burnett from Rumpus Animation.
Stunned Mullet: Australian slang which means 1)in complete bewilderment or astonishment and 2) in a state of inertia (Macquarie Dictionary).
Reynolds: “I think that is the only natural way that someone can feel in a time like this - things seem completely beyond control and a global state of shock is taking over.”
Ironically, the way Angler have chosen to deal with this inertia is to act decisively and honestly - digging down and uncovering their music in a very raw and exposed fashion.
The improvisation is an important factor their music - empowering them to extract the immediacy and energy from the music. Greenhalgh is quick to assert that this is not random searching: “A good fisherman knows what he wants to catch – there’s always a chance that something unexpected might bite on that hook, but that doesn’t change the intention.”
Reynolds and Greenhalgh have long been occupying the background of the cutting edge pop, rock, improv and jazz scenes from London and also Reynolds’ native Melbourne, Australia. Both are associates of the Loop Collective - a new breed of contemporary composers and improvisers setting the pace in the UK. Reynolds has also been found providing the keyboards for electro-pop acts such as Polly Scattergood (Mute) while Greenhalgh is most comfortable laying down the complex beats for cult avant-rock groups like Andrew Plummer’s World Sanguine Report.
With Stunned Mullet, the duo have demonstrated an ambidextrous ability to twist and turn the familiar with the unexpected.
Stunned Mullet will only be released digitally. The prohibitive cost of manufacturing CDs is putting musicians out of business. Support the arts by downloading from authorised sites and please contribute to the costs.
